Anxiety
General anxiety and panic attacks
Just about everyone knows what anxiety feels like. It can vary from a very mild feeling of general anxiousness or nervousness, to being slightly more 'on edge', through to a feeling of severe prostration.
When someone feels like this, they often feel that they are completely unable to do anything about it, other than to suffer its effects. They often find it difficult to think about anything other than their 'bad nerves' or anxiety.
It's often like there's an immense feeling of loss of control and for a while it can seem as though the anxiety is consuming them and that's all there is to life now, whereas previously they'd felt fine.
Often they won't know what's causing it - but they will know that they feel simply dreadful and they'll often feel a need to withdraw from certain people or situations, too, especially if they feel that those people or situations worsen it.
Of course, everybody gets anxious now and then, there's nothing unusual in that. But when anxiety becomes more often or is of an intense duration, then that may be the time to start thinking about getting some form of help.
People often experience panic or anxiety attacks, too (although not always) and these are covered in a separate section on this website.
The list of anxiety disorders
Anxiety disorders are very common, affecting a large percentage of the adult population, and they can present in all kinds of ways, but chiefly they fall into five main categories:
1. General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
2. Panic Disorder
3. Phobias (which includes Social Phobia, or Social Anxiety Disorder)
4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
5. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
It should be noted that they can start at any time, either in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
How typical feelings of anxiety impact
For some people, the effects of the anxiety can be profound, crippling even, and the impact of this condition often leads to a big rearrangement of the person's life. This is because obligations, responsibilities, and a more general way-of-life have to be adjusted to accommodate the anxiety or panic attacks.
Depression, as well as sleep disturbances, or psychosomatic problems may also come about as a result of general anxiety and all of these things can have a further follow-on effect on relationships, socialising, sex life, work and schooling.
It is useful to note that one of the most common forms of anxiety is social anxiety (also known as social phobia). This can affect as much as 13% of the population and can present itself in more than one way. Please see the social phobia page for more details on this.
Hypnotherapy can help with anxiety
How is it treated?
Pure hypnoanalysis is used as a treatment for anxiety and it can give very rewarding and satisfying results in a relatively brief period of time.
