Weight Loss and Eating Issues
With, on average, about 1 in 3 people currently dieting and re-dieting again, why is it, that despite everything, dieting on its own just doesn't seem to work in the longer term?
The answer is surprisingly revealing. Dieting, in general, seems to miss the point.
This is because dieting on its own is seldom enough. Put simply, the people that successfully and permanently lose the excess pounds, have usually changed the role that the food plays in their life. They've learned to respect their food ... and to respect themselves.
Underlying psychological pressures.
Of course, dieting / slimming can help a person to lose excess weight to begin with, but once the weight reduction plan comes to its conclusion, the pounds can slowly pile back on.
Dieting alone, just doesn't seem to address the problem of some people having an underlying psychological drive to overeat.
There are quite a few reasons why someone might feel the 'need' to overeat. Commonly, these are:
- Compensation eating (comfort eating) - this is overeating to help fulfill a psychological, or emotional issue. Eating because of stress and eating to make yourself 'feel better' also come into this bracket.
- Reward eating - the individual 'treats' themself because they've had a 'good' or even a 'bad' day. They often feel they shouldn't have it, but do so anyway. Reward eating can still come under the more general term of compensation eating.
- Feeling, subconsciously or otherwise, a need to be noticed and/or larger than life.
- Wishing to erect a 'barrier' that will have the effect of 'pushing' other people away. This is usually a subconscious motivation.
Self image.
Conversely, some people will state, quite sincerely, that they desperately need to lose weight because they're 'feel fat' , or they're 'enormous', when the reality is that they're not overweight at all.
This is especially true for the person with anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
Loosely put, the force at work here, of course, is self-image, however distorted that self-image may be. However, this is still an issue for the individual and this is also something that can be helped.
Treatment for eating issues with hypnotherapy.
Where eating issues are concerned, hypnoanalysis is still usually the treatment of choice, as it's geared towards finding out the reason why a person is repeatedly feeling the need to eat more than they feel they should, or indeed, at the other end of the scale, why there's such a problem with self/body image.
Another method occasionally employed to help with weight control / weight loss is suggestion therapy. However, this suggestion or visualisation session is best looked at in the context of an interesting and enjoyable morale-boosting session. It's especially suitable for those people who are currently on a diet, or who are about to embark on one ... time to relax... time for yourself.
Whatever the reason for dealing with eating issues, analytical hypnotherapy can be used as a very effective way forward.
